Ineligible Teams Will Be Removed From BCS Computer Rankings
This past Friday, the BCS announced that any team which is ineligible for postseason play will be allowed to be ranked in the computer polls, but will not receive credit for their ranking from the BCS formula.
The announcement most directly affects USC, which is currently serving a two-season postseason ban from the NCAA because of sanctions stemming from the involvement of Reggie Bush with a marketing agency during his time at USC.
In his ruling, BCS executive director Bill Hancock announced that because USC is not eligible for postseason play, their ranking in any of the six computer polls will be disregarded and teams which are behind the Trojans in any of the six polls will be moved up one spot. Although 120 teams will be ranked in each computer poll during the eight week run of BCS rankings, only 119 will receive credit.
For example, if USC enters week nine ranked 19th in the Colley Matrix and Washington is ranked 20th, when the BCS runs its weekly formula, the Huskies will receive credit for being ranked 19th by Colley, and all of the 101 teams behind USC will be moved up one position in the eyes of the BCS.
Earlier in 2010, the Coaches Poll announced USC would not be eligible to be ranked in their poll.
The ruling will serve as guidance for any circumstance which resembles the postseason ban of USC in future BCS seasons.
