Preseason Heisman Watch

The first Heisman Watch update of the season:

Tim Tebow

The 2007 Heisman award winner and extraordinary Florida Gator will once again attempt to win a second Heisman, after last year’s campaign fell just short. In finishing third behind McCoy and Bradford, Tebow was still the candidate who received the most first place votes, and there were many who believed he still deserved the accolade. Tebow will once again lead a National Championship-caliber team, as general consensus seems to indicate that the Gators are once again the favorites to win the national title. As is often the case, Tebow’s hopes may rest with his team’s performance.

Colt McCoy

The nation’s most proficient passer from last year, and runner up in last year’s Heisman voting, Colt McCoy returns to head the Texas Longhorn offense. McCoy’s accuracy last season was record breaking, and led Texas to the brink of the National Championship Game. The Longhorns settled for the Fiesta Bowl, and preformed so well that many believed the national title should have been theirs’. McCoy is likely to continue his success, but one can only wonder whether or not McCoy can match the incredible statistics that he posted last season.

Sam Bradford

After Tim Tebow returned after his Heisman winning performance in 2007, Bradford returns to attempt to become just the second player in NCAA history to win consecutive Heisman trophies, the other being Archie Griffin. Bradford found himself at the helm of one of the most prolific offenses in FBS history, recording six straight games of 50 points or more. Bradford returns for his red shirt junior year to not only attempt to win another Heisman, but to lead Oklahoma to the national title that has alluded them so many times.

Jahvid Best

Jahvid Best, California’s best Heimsan chance in quite some time enters this season on a wave of expectations following his productive 2008 campaign. Seemingly USC’s first legitimate obstacle for the Pac-10 title in some time, the Bears are ready once again to make national noise, and their prospects to do just that may rest on the legs of Best.

Terrelle Pryor

Ohio State’s prized recruit of the 2007 class, Terrelle Pryor returns for his sophomore year to the Buckeyes with the hopes of delivering on the hype that followed him throughout his high school career. Ohio State successes in recent years have not matched their early 2000′s teams, but the losers of two of the past three BCS National Title games hope to change that this year. Pryor’s Heisman chances may just rest on how well the Buckeyes are able to do in a much tougher and deeper Big 10. Pryor’s dual-threat skill set has allowed him to rack up consistently impressive numbers both on the ground and through the air, but his playing time was limited in his first year with the team as he and Todd Boeckman split time at the helm of the Buckeye offense, but the attack is all Pryor’s this year.

Stay tuned for more Heisman stuff!
